Bonus Content: Deathwatch Deeds

In the absence of any news I can share about my current set of projects just yet, I’m going to experiment with a new idea for an article: publishing random bits of material I’ve written up for games I ran for friends. This isn’t typically stuff that’s as polished as my professional submissions, but hopefully it will be fun and useful. The first entry is a set of new Deeds for Deathwatch I came up with to allow a Space Wolf character to bond with a mighty Fenrisian Wolf. I know there are rules for this in First Founding, but I figure it can’t hurt to offer players multiple ways to represent something. I wrote this up before encountering those rules, as well, so it might offer some insight into game design for those who are interested in considering the advantages and disadvantages of each version. The primary inspiration was actually the rules for Familiars from Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd edition’s Realms of Sorcery supplement.

WOLF BOND (NEW DEED)

Chapter: Space Wolves

Cost: 1000 xp

Fenris is a planet of fierce predators, and the fiercest of these is the Fenrisian Wolf. More deadly still, however, are the Adeptus Astartes of the Space Wolves. Sometimes a Space Wolf will seek out a companion in battle among the icy wastes of Asaheim, finding and taming a Fenrisian Wolf. The bond that grows between warrior and wolf can become such that nothing will part them, and if such a warrior is seconded to the Deathwatch, he brings his feral companion along for his Vigil.

Effects:

Apply all of the following changes to your character.

Skills: Gain the Wrangling Skill.

Gear: You gain a Fenrisian Wolf as a permanent companion. It gains XP equal to one half of all XP awarded to your character, which it may spend on Fenrisian Wolf Advances. If it would die, you may burn a Fate Point for it as if it were your own character.

THUNDERWOLF TAMER (NEW DEED)

Chapter: Space Wolves

Cost: 3500 xp

Requirement: Rank 4+

A Thunderwolf is like unto a force of nature or a primal god among beasts more than a mere animal. To challenge one in combat is suicide, and to think of taming one, insanity. Naturally, this is a challenge few Space Wolves would pass up. Not many are entrusted with leave to risk their lives in such an endeavor, and fewer still survive trying. Nonetheless, some of the deadliest veterans of the Space Wolves are accompanied by a titanic Thunderwolf. Even the Watch-Captains of the Deathwatch balk at the idea of trying to deny such a warrior his boon companion during a Vigil. Instead, they usually send him on as many deadly Missions as possible, to minimize the time they must deal with the pair of feral fighters.

Effects:

Apply all of the following changes to your character.

Skills: Gain the Wrangling Skill.

Talents: Gain the Talented (Wrangling) Talent.

Gear: You gain a Thunderwolf as a permanent companion. It gains XP equal to one half of all XP awarded to your character, which it may spend on Thunderwolf Advances. If it would die, you may burn a Fate Point for it as if it were your own character.
